Laser Hair Removal- The Do’s & Don’ts

Laser Hair Removal- The Do’s & Don’ts

Laser hair removal has become a popular choice for those seeking a long-term solution to unwanted hair. Before booking a session, it's essential to understand the procedure, its benefits, potential risks, and what to expect during and after treatment. This comprehensive guide will provide you with the necessary information to make an informed decision.

What Is Laser Hair Removal?

Laser hair removal is a medical procedure that uses concentrated beams of light (lasers) to target and destroy hair follicles. The pigment (melanin) in the hair absorbs the light, which damages the follicle and inhibits future hair growth. This method can be applied to various body areas, including the face, legs, arms, underarms, and bikini line.

Benefits of Laser Hair Removal

  • While not always permanent, laser hair removal significantly reduces hair growth over time, leading to smoother skin for extended periods.

  • Lasers can target dark, coarse hairs with precision, leaving the surrounding skin undamaged.

  • Each laser pulse takes a fraction of a second and can treat multiple hairs simultaneously, making the process efficient.

  • Unlike shaving or waxing, laser hair removal reduces the likelihood of ingrown hairs.

Considerations Before Treatment

  • Skin and Hair Type: Laser hair removal is most effective for individuals with light skin and dark hair due to the contrast, which allows the laser to target the pigment effectively. Advancements in technology have made it possible to treat a broader range of skin tones and hair colors, but effectiveness can vary.

  • Treatment Areas: Common areas for treatment include the face, legs, arms, and underarms. It's essential to discuss with your provider which areas you wish to treat.

  • Number of Sessions: Multiple sessions are typically required to achieve optimal results because hair grows in different cycles. Most individuals need between six to ten treatments, spaced several weeks apart.

Preparing for Your Session

  • Limit sun exposure for at least six weeks before treatment, as tanned skin can increase the risk of side effects.

  • Refrain from waxing, plucking, or electrolysis, as these can disturb the hair follicle. Shaving is typically recommended before treatment, as it preserves the hair shaft and follicle.

  • Schedule a consultation with our skin coach to discuss your medical history, potential risks, and expected outcomes.

What to Expect During the Procedure

  • You and the esthetician will wear protective eyewear to shield your eyes from the laser light.

  • The treatment area will be cleaned, and a cooling gel or device may be used to protect the outer skin and minimize discomfort.

  • The esthetician will apply the laser to the treatment area. You may feel a sensation similar to a rubber band snapping against the skin.

The Do’s

1. Keep Your Skin Cool and Calm

Laser hair removal can leave your skin feeling slightly sensitive, so soothing it is key. Use gentle, cooling products like aloe vera gel to hydrate and calm your skin.

2. Apply Sunscreen Religiously

Your skin will be more sensitive to sunlight after treatment. Protect it by applying a broad-spectrum SPF of at least 30 whenever you’re exposed to the sun, even if you’re just running errands.

3. Moisturize Regularly

Hydration helps your skin recover more quickly. Stick to a gentle, fragrance-free moisturizer to prevent irritation.

4. Exfoliate (But Wait a Few Days)

After 4–5 days, gentle exfoliation can help loosen treated hairs that may fall out. Use a soft exfoliating glove or scrub to keep your skin smooth.

5. Stay Consistent with Sessions

Hair grows in cycles, so multiple sessions are necessary to target all hair follicles effectively. Follow the schedule recommended by your provider for optimal results.

The Don’ts

1. Don’t Expose Your Skin to Heat

Avoid hot showers, saunas, steam rooms, or any activity that causes excessive sweating for at least 48 hours. Heat can irritate the treated area and delay recovery.

2. Don’t Wax, Pluck, or Tweeze

After laser treatment, let your body shed the treated hair naturally. Avoid any hair removal methods that disrupt the follicle, as this can interfere with the results.

3. Don’t Skip SPF

UV exposure can cause hyperpigmentation or sensitivity in treated areas. Always wear sunscreen, even on cloudy days.

4. Don’t Use Harsh Products

Steer clear of exfoliants, retinoids, AHAs, or any active ingredients for 5–7 days. These can further irritate your skin and delay healing.

5. Don’t Scratch or Pick

It’s normal to experience mild redness or itching but resist the urge to scratch or pick at your skin. This helps prevent irritation or scarring.
